BERLIN, Oct. 27 -- Norbert Lammert from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party, was re-elected on Tuesday as the President of the lower house of the German parliament. Lammert, 61, won a majority of votes in the 622-member lower house, which on Tuesday convened its first session after the general election. The renowned politician, from the western German city of Bochum, was elected as the parliament's speaker on Oct. 18, 2005. Later on Wednesday, the German parliament will elect a new Chancellor, and Merkel is set to be re-elected to lead a coalition government consisting of the CDU and the Free Democrats (FDP). |
